Remote Sensing and Critical Mineral Discovery Workshop 2026: Advanced Python Tutorial for Analysis and Visualization

The Workshop on Remote Sensing and Critical Mineral Discovery was held at the University of Utah on September 29, 2026. In the afternoon session, NASA LP DAAC, NASA JPL, ORNL DAAC, and the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) presented an advanced Python tutorial on analysis and visualization of imaging spectroscopy data for mineral mapping.

Tutorial Overview

The tutorial, Temporal Aggregation of EMIT Mineralogy vs. Ground Alunite Geochemistry, walks through a complete workflow for mapping alunite in southwestern Utah (Beaver and Iron Counties). Using the earthaccess Python library, users search for and stream EMIT L2B Mineral Identification, Band Depth and Uncertainty granules, retain scenes that fully cover the study area, and apply per-pixel quality masks. They then group Tetracorder mineral identifications into five indicator classes (alunite, pyrophyllite, kaolinite, dickite, and white mica), align the scenes to a common grid, and aggregate them through time to calculate the number of valid observations, the most frequently detected minerals, alunite persistence, and mean alunite band depth. Finally, the aggregated results are compared with surface geochemical samples from the UGS to evaluate how well the EMIT-derived patterns match ground measurements. The tutorial can still be run locally by following the setup instructions.
